últimas notícias da empresa sobre Guide to Selecting 304304L Stainless Steel for Projects

Selecting the right material for a project can be challenging, especially when balancing corrosion resistance with machinability. 304/304L dual-certified stainless steel may be the ideal solution. This material offers exceptional corrosion resistance while remaining easy to weld and machine, streamlining project execution.

304/304L: Dual Certification, Guaranteed Quality

304/304L dual-certified stainless steel is a low-carbon "18-8" austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Its primary advantage lies in its superior corrosion resistance, particularly its resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or stress relief. This ensures durability even after high-temperature processing.

The ultra-low carbon content minimizes harmful carbide formation, making it suitable for most welded structures and applications with operating temperatures below 800°F (427°C). In its annealed state, it is non-magnetic and cannot be hardened through heat treatment. However, cold working can increase its hardness and tensile strength, though this may introduce slight magnetism.

As a dual-certified material, 304/304L meets both 304 and 304L specifications, allowing it to be used interchangeably in applications requiring either grade.

Versatile Applications, Exceptional Performance

304/304L stainless steel is widely used in mechanically processed, welded, ground, or polished components requiring corrosion resistance. It performs well in corrosive environments such as pulp and chemical industries, as well as low-temperature applications.

In industries with stringent hygiene requirements—such as dairy, beverage, and food processing—304/304L is commonly used for equipment handling acetic, nitric, and citric acids, as well as organic and inorganic chemicals, dyes, crude oil, and refined petroleum products. Its non-magnetic properties make it suitable for precision instruments, while its aesthetic qualities lend themselves to architectural applications.

While 304 plate is often used in corrosion-resistant applications, it is unsuitable for high-temperature environments. For welded applications, 304/304L is preferred due to its excellent tensile, forming, and stamping properties.

Machinability: Efficient and Reliable

With a machinability rating of 45% compared to B1112 steel and an average cutting speed of 75 feet per minute, 304/304L is relatively easy to machine. It can be welded using all standard commercial methods except forging or hammer welding, producing strong, ductile welds. Post-forging annealing is recommended to maintain optimal corrosion resistance.

The forging temperature range is 2100°–2350°F (1149°–1288°C), with forging below 1700°F (927°C) discouraged. While heat treatment cannot harden the material, cold working increases tensile strength and hardness. Annealing should be performed at 1850°–2050°F (1010°–1121°C), followed by rapid cooling—water quenching for thick sections and air cooling for thin ones. Stress relief occurs between 400°–750°F (204°–399°C).
