What is an M12 Circular Connector?
An M12 connector is a metric circular connector used in industrial automation and other harsh environment applications requiring compact, robust, and reliable power, signal, and data connections. It is one of the most common designated connectors in the industrial market and is considered a backbone connector for IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) systems.
The M12 connector, part of the electrical connector series ranging from M5 to M12 types, is defined by the diameter of its external thread. Standardized under IEC-61076-2-101, M12 connectors are highly versatile, offering a wide range of locking mechanisms and other options. They are interchangeable and backward compatible with other M12 interfaces of the same coding, ensuring interoperability among manufacturers. These connectors handle bandwidths up to 10 Gb/s and power up to 16V and can be configured to support Profinet, SPE, and fieldbus protocols.
History and Evolution
In 1985, the German connector company Lumberg introduced the M8/M12 connector interfaces at the Hannover Fair. Initially designed as a waterproof alternative to the old RK30 sensor connector, which was common in automotive manufacturing plants at the time, the M12 connector has become a powerful and versatile interconnect widely used in factory automation, autonomous robotics, data transmission, and control.
The standard M12 connector is defined by IEC 61076-2-101:2012. The original IEC standard was published in 2003, and it is currently undergoing its third revision. In 2021, a new push-pull M12 standard, known as IEC 61076-2-010, was introduced. To prevent mismatching, M-series circular connectors have specific coding options that define the number and arrangement of pins. The M12 includes:
M12 connectors are typically used with Cat5e and Cat6A cable types and have a current rating of up to 16V. They offer various mounting options, including through-hole, surface mount, and wave soldering. Materials for M12 housings include stainless steel, brass, copper, gold, and alloys. Reinforced M12 connectors and their cable assemblies are designed to ensure robust performance in high-reliability and harsh environment applications, including extreme temperatures, radiation, rough handling, chemicals, and other environmental factors.
Sealing and Protection
Sealed M12 connectors are available in IP67, IP68, and IP69 versions. Environmental protection against the ingress of liquids and particulates is a key factor that makes this connector a mainstay in harsh operational environments. Waterproof and sealed features are particularly important in fluid and pneumatic configurations.
EMI/RFI Protection
Interference from electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI) is a significant issue for devices used in environments filled with electronic equipment. Shielded and unshielded connector and cable assembly options are available to mitigate these interferences.
Handling Advantages
M12 connectors are designed to provide quick and convenient connections even under challenging conditions. They come with screw-threaded, bayonet, and ergonomic push-pull locking mechanisms for blind mating situations. Keying, color-coding, and LED options enhance mating reliability. These connectors are considered field-repairable and backward compatible.
